火とり魔 (Hitorima) - Fire-stealing demon
Mizuki Shigeru (from Youkai Daihyakka)
Translation: :iconkurenaikiba:

Hitorima is a youkai that, long ago, in Kaga country (Ishikawa prefecture) was spotted in hot springs in the mountains. It is said that it eats flames.
When this youkai draws close, the flame flickering in your lamp will grow smaller so you will know very soon that it's there.
This is a youkai with a rather slender body.

On Hitorima's Name

火とり魔 can be split into 3 parts; 火(hi), とり(tori)and 魔(ma) but the cause for confusion lies in the 火とり part of the name.
A 火取り as a noun, my dictionary tells me is an "incense burner" however that translation seems a little odd to me ("Incense burner demon"), it doesn't really match the youkai but 取り could also come from the verb 取る(toru) meaning "to take". 火(hi), means fire or flame. Thus, I came to assume that it's "fire-taking" rather than an "incense burner".
Mizuki Shigeru doesn't use the kanji 取 but it is used by other authors describing the youkai. (^^)b
Halloo~
This youkai is a little obscure, huh ^^; The entry is even tiny but it's an interesting youkai, isn't it! In spite of it's ability to cause a lot of harm, unlike Wanyuudou, it doesn't~ Keeping it classy, Hitorima (ufu)
If you enjoyed it and would like more, please let me know!! >w<

Hm, a relatively minor youkai. But yeah, your assumption is correct regarding the meaning of its name. Good job :)
